Covers from Dr. Fate Mini-Series

Here are all the covers to Golden's 5-issue Dr. Fate mini-series featuring Hector Hall as Dr. Fate.  Love the artwork on these covers.  To me they portray everything that Dr. Fate should be: powerful, heroic, and mystical.

James Robinson Answers Questions from Twitter @ SDCC

James Robinson answering questions from Twitter at this year's SD Comic-Con.  My favorite quote from James: "Obviously if you have magic, you have to have Dr. Fate."

Earth 2 #3 Review (spoilers)

As everyone who reads my blog probably already knows, this issue got me very excited as it provided the first hint of Dr. Fate's return into the DCnU.  Apart from that, Robinson delivers another great read as his world building is now rapidly beginning to take shape.  Robinson has started to hint at the building of a superhero team, as it appears that Dr. Fate has led Hawkgirl to find the Flash in order to team up and take on this new world threat.  As one can see above, the new threat is the Man of Grey or better known as Solomon Grundy.  And we see how he will be one of Alan Scott's main enemy's as Scott is now champion of the Green (I wonder if that will later be revealed to be a part of the Starheart later or if that will be dropped all together) and Solomon is champion of the grey or the rot.

Overall, Robinson's slow build, which is now apparently coming to ahead, has been fantastic.  He is a great story teller and is really making his run with Earth 2 alot of fun.  As a fan, I'm enjoying speculating not over when the other members will be joining, but also what they will look like and what their new origins will be like.  This issue again gets two thumbs up from me, as Robinson has now upped the ante with what looks like a much more powerful Solomon Grundy for the heroes of Earth 2 to deal with.

We finally have confirmation of Dr. Fate!  Yesterday, on Comicvine's (www.comicvine.com) podcast, James Robinson confirmed that Dr. Fate will be a part of the Earth 2 superhero team (JSA).  I did not have a chance to listen to the podcast, but a twitter friend relayed the following quote from Mr. Robinson: "I'm already announcing the next arc is 'Magic vs. Science' ... Once Dr. Fate is around, he'll be a part of the team." -James

This is great news!  Now we just have to wait and see when he'll finally appear.  Also, gotta wonder what his new costume design will look like.  We'll have to worry about that later, for the moment I'm extremely excited and happy that Dr. Fate will be returning soon.

A big thank you to Matt SantoriGriffith (@fotocub on twitter) for relaying the information.

Earth 2 Dr. Fate News!

Last week we had Jeff Lemire leaking on his twitter account that he tried to put Dr. Fate in his JL Dark books but was not allowed to use him.  He went on to state that he believed that Dr. Fate might be appearing elsewhere very soon.  Speculation began among DC fans that he (Dr. Fate) was reserved for James Robinson's Earth 2 books.  Will Dr. Fate fans, rejoice!  We had the first mention of Fate in yesterday's release of Earth 2 #3!

In an interaction between Jay Garrick and Hawkgirl, Jay asks how she knew where he would be.  Hawkgirl responds by saying that Fate (in bold) showed her the way.  Jay goes on to say something to the effect that he doesn't believe in fate, to which Hawkgirl again responds with "Maybe you will when you meet the guy."

Okay, okay...so it's not exactly confirmation of Dr. Fate but the hints are pretty clear that it is him.  And it looks like he is playing a major part in putting the JSA team together as he guided Hawkgirl to the Flash.  Very exciting news, can't wait to see the good Doctor again in the comics.  I wonder if he'll keep the Dr. title or will he only go by Fate now?  Wonder if it will be Kent Nelson behind the Helm of Nabu?  And if so, was it him in the alley that Jay ran into in the very first issue?  So many questions, it'll be fun finding the answers in the coming months.

Amulet of Anubis

Today I want to take a look at one of Dr. Fate's other armaments.   The Helm of Nabu, is of course, the most well known of Dr. Fate's weapons as it once was the home of Nubu's soul.  However, apart from the helm, Dr. Fate also has the Amulet of Anubis and the Cloak of Destiny.  Below is the dc.wikia entry for the Amulet (http://dc.wikia.com/):

In 2030 B.C., the Egyptian deity Anubis rewarded his most devoted follower, the mad priest Khalis, with a gift, the Amulet of Anubis, holding part of the god's own power. In the following years, Khalis used the Amulet to take mental control of a legion of Nubian slaves and made them build "the mightiest of pyramids" to honor Anubis.
However, when Nabu the Wise, a Lord of Order in human form who served various Egyptian Pharaohs, discovered the actions of Khalis, he was not pleased. With a wave of his arm, Nabu freed the slaves from the priest's spell and let them have their revenge on Khalis. As Khalis was buried, Nabu took the Amulet as his own. [1]
In the 1940s, Nabu transformed Kent Nelson into his champion Dr. Fate, The Amulet has been part of the arsenal of this Fate and all his successors ever since.

The circular device that adorns the livery collar worn around Doctor Fate's chest and shoulders is the Amulet of Anubis, which gives anyone who wears it vast magical abilities.
House of Souls: The amulet has also been shown to house the souls of many who have worn the vestments of Fate.
Reality Perception: Dr Fate can see the network patterns of matter and energy that form the universe with unearthly ability. This enables the following abilities:
  • Extra-dimensional Detection
  • Cosmic Perception
  • Penetrate illusions: ability to penetrate illusions by focusing on the true energy patterns of a being or object.
  • Gauge Condition: ability to perceive the physical and mental condition of a being.
  • Alternate Reality Sight: ability to perceive the occurrences in other realities.
  • True Sight: ability to penetrate concealment and disguises, and see the true nature of matter.
  • Dimensional Sight: ability to perceive occurrences beyond the barrier of dimensions.
  • True Sight: See through matter.
  • Aura Perception: Dr Fate can virtually see and gain knowledge of almost everything about a person or an object a person has been in proximity with. Seeing an aura can indicate the following:
  • Karma: The Karma of a character
  • Health: The Health of a character
  • Ability Power Level: The power level of an ability
  • Object Power Level: The power level of an object
  • True Form: The true Physical Form of a character or object
  • Ability Boost: Dr Fate may double any one ability or power cast.
Apart from the above, it is also said that the Amulet of Anubis also contains it's own universe.

I think that in order to have a better understanding of the Amulet, we should look at the actual Egyptian mythos of the god Anubis.  The following write up is taken from http://www.anubis.org/

Looks: Anubis was usually depicted as a human with a black jackal- head. He also was featured with big perked ears and a coif that extended from his ears to his neck. The coif had a hair like texture, almost resembling a mane. Unknown to most people he was also represented with a large bushy tail. The reason his tail was unknown is because he is so rarely seen with a view of his back side. The majority of the drawings of him are semi head on. Commonly, he was shown holding a pike in one hand, and a crook or shorter cross in the other.

Significance: Anubis was one of the gods of the dead. His main roles were in the cemeteries and mummification processes. It was Anubis's job to open, and escort the recently deceased to the TUAT, also known as the underworld. Occasionally higher class families would get mummified or embalmed by someone wearing an Anubis head dress to symbolize the passage to the dead. The reason some think Anubis was portrayed with a jackal head was because of the scavenging aspect of jackals. When Anubis was an adult, he accompanied Osiris on his excursion of the world. When Osiris was murdered, Anubis felt it necessary to do something special for his mentor/father. Anubis decided to help Isis and Nephthys bury him. At this time, Anubis made the choice to embalm and wrap Osiris to keep him from getting corrupted by the air. This process was forever known as funeral rights. After this day, Anubis was known as "The Lord of Mummy Wrappings." The people of Egypt thought, if it was good enough for the gods, it would be good enough for them. They also thought, if a body wasn't embalmed or mummified properly Anubis would sense this, then dig up and eat the body.
Family: There is a lot of controversy over who is Anubis's real family. In some of the pyramid text Anubis is written as the fourth son of Ra with a daughter named Kebehut. The more recently found tablets about Anubis are more widely accepted. However, they say nothing about Ra, and it isn't clear who his real Father is. Depending on who is asked, they would either say Osiris or Set is the father, and Nephthys is the mother. Set was always believed to be infertile, so some think that because of this, Nephthys went looking for a different person to have her child with.

So with that, we have the histories of the actual Anubis and the fictitious Amulet he created which became one of Doctor Fate's weapons.  As always, it's neat to have actual history/historical mythology crossover with comic history/mythology.
