Today I want to take a look at one of Dr. Fate's other armaments. The Helm of Nabu, is of course, the most well known of Dr. Fate's weapons as it once was the home of Nubu's soul. However, apart from the helm, Dr. Fate also has the Amulet of Anubis and the Cloak of Destiny. Below is the dc.wikia entry for the Amulet (http://dc.wikia.com/):
Apart from the above, it is also said that the Amulet of Anubis also contains it's own universe.
I think that in order to have a better understanding of the Amulet, we should look at the actual Egyptian mythos of the god Anubis. The following write up is taken from http://www.anubis.org/:
Looks: Anubis was usually depicted as a human with a black jackal- head. He also was featured with big perked ears and a coif that extended from his ears to his neck. The coif had a hair like texture, almost resembling a mane. Unknown to most people he was also represented with a large bushy tail. The reason his tail was unknown is because he is so rarely seen with a view of his back side. The majority of the drawings of him are semi head on. Commonly, he was shown holding a pike in one hand, and a crook or shorter cross in the other.
Significance: Anubis was one of the gods of the dead. His main roles were in the cemeteries and mummification processes. It was Anubis's job to open, and escort the recently deceased to the TUAT, also known as the underworld. Occasionally higher class families would get mummified or embalmed by someone wearing an Anubis head dress to symbolize the passage to the dead. The reason some think Anubis was portrayed with a jackal head was because of the scavenging aspect of jackals. When Anubis was an adult, he accompanied Osiris on his excursion of the world. When Osiris was murdered, Anubis felt it necessary to do something special for his mentor/father. Anubis decided to help Isis and Nephthys bury him. At this time, Anubis made the choice to embalm and wrap Osiris to keep him from getting corrupted by the air. This process was forever known as funeral rights. After this day, Anubis was known as "The Lord of Mummy Wrappings." The people of Egypt thought, if it was good enough for the gods, it would be good enough for them. They also thought, if a body wasn't embalmed or mummified properly Anubis would sense this, then dig up and eat the body.
Family: There is a lot of controversy over who is Anubis's real family. In some of the pyramid text Anubis is written as the fourth son of Ra with a daughter named Kebehut. The more recently found tablets about Anubis are more widely accepted. However, they say nothing about Ra, and it isn't clear who his real Father is. Depending on who is asked, they would either say Osiris or Set is the father, and Nephthys is the mother. Set was always believed to be infertile, so some think that because of this, Nephthys went looking for a different person to have her child with.
So with that, we have the histories of the actual Anubis and the fictitious Amulet he created which became one of Doctor Fate's weapons. As always, it's neat to have actual history/historical mythology crossover with comic history/mythology.
