Dr. Fate into 2013

The upcoming year seems really promising for the Doctor Fate character.  For one, he will be reintroduced into the DCnU with a brand new secret identity in the form of Khalid and getting his costume redesigned by Brett Booth.  Needless to say, I am super excited to see the new Dr. Fate in action in the pages of James Robinson's Earth 2. Apart from his reintroduction into the pages of DC Comics, Dr. Fate will also be making at least one more appearance in the Young Justice show as evidenced in this preview clip by DC Nation: Young Justice Clip

However, apparently, that will not be the good doctor's only television appearance as evidently he has also been tapped to appear on his own animated short on DC Nation!  Now, I'm really excited about that!  I have not seen any official announcements by DC on the Dr. Fate shorts but it is listed in the DC Nation Shorts Wikipedia page.  The Dr. Fate shorts have also been discussed briefly on other blogs, but again, I haven't read anything official from DC Comics or DC Nation.  If the shorts do happen, I will be a very happy man.  So cheers to the new year filled with our favorite Lord of Order!  So glad that the world didn't end this month. :-)

Dr. Fate Transformation Video from Smallville

I know people have different opinions about the version of Dr. Fate that was presented in the Absolute Justice episode of Smallville, some positive, some negative.  To me it was a rush to see my favorite hero come to life, so I really enjoyed it.  Sure, it sucked that Dr. Fate didn't see much action and that Kent Nelson  gets killed by Icicle, but it was still awesome to see the character in a live-action [made for t.v.] movie.  Could the character have been handled better?  Yes, but not gonna dwell on that, just the positive.  So with that I give you the Dr. Fate transformation scene from Smallville (I still get chills watching it):

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!  Here is a totally bad-ass artwork of the JSA I found on Deviant Art.  When I saw this I couldn't help but say "Whoa!" out loud.  My after-Christmas gift to you all.

Dr. Fate News

Big news on twitter yesterday!  In case you missed out on some of the twitter conversations yesterday, I was honored to have James Robinson reply to my "Thoughts on the New Dr. Fate" post.  These are some of the news he dropped yesterday:

Thanks for the blog piece  and for the record, Kent Nelson will be an important person in Khalid's life/past/education and-

-- Yes , may your hopes be calmed -- Dr. Fate will wear the full helmet. In fact I think 's reinterpretation of --

-- The costume while retaining all the cool elements of the original to be quite brilliant.

So HUGE news for Dr. Fate fans from the man himself, thank you so much JR!!  Just to recap:

-Kent Nelson will still be attached to the Dr. Fate character
-Dr. Fate will retain the full helm and most of the original elements of his iconic costume
-Brett Booth was confirmed as the artist that is redesigning the New 52 Dr. Fate

All around great news!  Could not be any happier!  Now, it's just playing the waiting game until Earth 2 # 9 comes out this February.  Thanks again to James Robinson for all the information!

A Few Thoughts On The New Dr. Fate

Well, we've been somewhat formally introduced to James Robinson's version of the New 52 Dr. Fate and I thought I'd write down some of my thoughts about the latest incarnation of my favorite character.

Here's what we know:

-His name is Khalid and appears to be of Middle Eastern descent.  He doesn't appear to be of the Nelson family line anymore and I am okay with that, although we still haven't heard his last name as of yet.  Changing Dr. Fate's ethnicity is something that I advocated early on in both my twitter account and later on this blog.  Hopefully he is a native Egyptian, that would be way cool.  Besides, Kent Nelson will always be the original Dr. Fate and no amount of reboots can change that.  I am prepared for a fresh start with Khalid, but K. Nelson and his Grand Nephew Kent V. Nelson will always have a special place in my heart.
-Even if Khalid is not Egyptian, from the cover of Earth 2 #10 it looks like Dr. Fate will still have connections to Egyptian/Assyrian mythology as evidenced by the large ankh shining down on the characters.  This is awesome!!!  I was hoping Dr. Fate would still be affiliated with Egyptian/Assyrian magic, and looks like James Robinson was thinking the same.
-Khalid is terrified of becoming Dr. Fate but will come to terms with his destiny.  I think this is a HUGE hint at the fact that the possession element of Dr. Fate will remain in tact.  However, is it still Nabu doing the possessing?  Or some other deity?  And is that deity a Lord of Order?  The possession element to me is kind of take it or leave it.  I have seen different versions of Fate and the possession element was not always a part of the character so I was okay with whatever direction JR wanted to take it.

What we don't know/What I'd like to see:

-What does Dr. Fate look like in costume?  We've seen what Khalid looks like, but we have yet to see Dr. Fate's new redesign.  I'm hoping that the good Doctor continues to have the iconic full helm.  As a kid, his look was so different and is what initially drew me to the character.  I'm also hoping for the same color scheme and that he has artifacts that draw power from other deities (i.e. Amulet of Anubis).  And like a fellow comic twitterer (is that the correct terminology) stated, I'd like to see him look more like a sorcerer than a superhero. (sorry forgot who said that)
-Do the Lords of Order exist?  Another Dr. Fate element that I enjoy but can take or leave.  But it will be interesting to see what is done about that.  Also, is whichever deity is doing the possession to transform Khalid into Dr. Fate a Lord of Order?
-How much control will Khalid have as Dr. Fate?  I'd really like to have [Nabu] be more of an adviser and have Khalid have control than a full possession.
-What about Inza?  Inza has been a part of the Doctor Fate mythology since day one and an improtant one at that.  Even in the '40s she was written in the role of a strong woman who has always been more of a partner to Dr. Fate rather than just a love interest.  I would really hate to see that part of the Dr. Fate story line be put to rest and would love to see Inza return to the side of Dr. Fate this time as Khalid's soul mate.

The Ankh is Back (March E2 Solicitation)

Yes!  Dr. Fate will still have Egyptian/Assyrian affiliations!!!  So awesome.  This is the cover of Earth 2 # 10

Looks like there is a new Dr. Fate in town and he is no longer part of the Nelson family.    =(  Oh well, I highly welcome Khalid as the new Doctor Fate.

From the CBR solicitation:

• As Wotan holds The Flash’s mother hostage, Khalid must finally come to terms with his destiny as Doctor Fate!

The Power of Fate (more Dr. Fate news)

Some really exciting news from Newsarama and Comicbookresources, both of which sat down and spoke with James Robinson about the upcoming arc on Earth 2.  The interview on Comic Book Resources revealed that the next arc will be titled "The Power of Fate."    Even more exciting, in the Newsarama article James reveals the following about Dr. Fate:

Robinson: The next arc will show the man who will become Dr. Fate, it will establish whey he doesn't want to be Dr. Fate, and why it terrifies him actually.
We'll also integrate Wotan into the DC Universe. He's one of Dr. Fate's archenemies, and we'll keep elements of what he was like in the past while making him fresh and interesting.
Robinson hasn't revealed if it will be Kent Nelson reprising the role of Dr. Fate of another person, but being that most of the characters have kept their original names, I am betting on Kent Nelson being the man.  Only a couple of more months until our questions are answered.
