Dr. Fate Ankh T-shirt

It's funny that this t-shirt is called the Dr. Fate Ankh Navy t-shirt as there are no ankh symbols in the shirt.  This is how closely related Dr. Fate has become with the ankh, that his mere presence invokes a mental image of an ankh to  us mere mortals.

The t-shirt is actually really nice.  It has somewhat of a slim-fit but it is not a true slim fit.  The Dr. Fate image is pretty awesome, kind of reminds me a bit of a Batman-esque style pose he is striking.  Overall, a really cool t-shirt for Dr. Fate fans and reasonably priced at $19.99 over at www.superherostuff.com

DOCTOR FATE NEWS!

Well, it's more of a Dr. Fate mention, but it is the first Dr. Fate mention of the New 52!  Jeff Lemire, write of Justice League Dark, yesterday tweeted the following:

I tried to put Dr, Fate in jLDark but I think he's being used elsewhere soon

Awesome news! Thank you Mr. Lemire for confirming the existence of Dr. Fate in the new DC universe and that he'll be appearing soon!  More than likely, the good doctor will be appearing in Robinson's Earth 2 books.  Really exiting news!

Hopefully, Dr. Fate will be able to cross over into some JL Dark stories as I think he would make a really good fit into Lemire's books.

Review: DC Direct The New Frontier Dr. Fate Figure

So far, this is my  favorite Dr. Fate figure in my collection.  I love that the character has a very basic design, yet the figure is very detailed.  I also really like the retro look/feel of the character design.  The shades of blue and gold that were picked really "pop" out.  The Helm of Nabu looks great, and I like the fact that you can see Kent's eyes through the Helm's eye holes.  I also like that the character is bare handed instead of wearing gloves which is really reminiscent of the Golden Age Dr. Fate.  The Amulet of Anubis is very pronounced and appears to be attached by his cape.  I love the detail of his collar and that although you can tell that the character is supposed to be muscular, it is not over exaggerated.  You can also see line on his shirt from were it is tucked into his pants.

I really like the overall look of this figure. I think it is a great homage to the original Dr. Fate design by Gardner Fox.

DC Comics News

Big news day for DC comics today as they have announced the launch of four new comic series beginning in September.  The new series includes Talon, Sword of Sorcery, Team Seven, and the one that I am most excited about The Phantom Stranger.

Why am I excited for the Phantom Stranger?  Well, being that he is a mystical character I am automatically drawn to him.  Also, the fact that he may have actual historical ties (rumor is that he may be Judas) is really interesting.  And lastly, this is another book that Dr. Fate might also make an appearance in the future.  You can read more about the new series here http://geek-news.mtv.com/2012/06/08/dan-didio-phantom-stranger-series/ and here http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dc-new-52-four-series-didio-phantom-stranger.html

Lastly, in movie news, you all may have heard that WB is looking to move ahead with a Justice League movie.  They are also planning on a possible reboot of Green Lantern as well.  http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2012/06/08/wb-mulls-green-lantern-relaunch/

Exciting times for DC fans!

Earth 2 #2 Review

After reading all the accolades for Earth 2, #2 on twitter I feel like I may be the only person that didn't "love" this issue. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, and to his credit, James Robinson came back with a solid issue after such an amazing #1 story.  Maybe I am being too impatient since, after all, Mr. Robinson is building a world from scratch.  I mean, I can understand the Flash fans getting excited about their favorite character experiencing his new powers and all the hidden easter eggs were fun to look for. But the thing that bugs me, is the continuity of DC since the reboot.  Some characters seem know that this is a new timeline/dimension/world and from the looks of it, it appears that  Terry Sloan might be in on the joke.  I may be wrong but from his speech he seems to know a whole lot about what is happening.  I did enjoy his interaction with Michael Holt, and if I were to guess his "intentions" are not evil but he was planning on being this Earth's Mr. Terrific and with Holt now appearing on Earth 2 this takes away his name, almost reversing the legacy of the past in which Sloan was the first Mr. Terrific and Holt took on his name.  I hope that this is the case and Sloan is not pulling an Adrian Veidt, that would not do justice to Golden Age Mr. Terrific at all.

Like I said, I liked the issue but it didn't knock my socks off.  I enjoyed all the teases such as the Ted Grant poster and the Tyler-Chem billboard.  Also, who was the guy walking next to Jay in the alley talking about signs? Could that have been Kent Nelson? Maybe Wesley Dodd?  The appearance of Hawkgirl was cool, but not anything that really grabbed me.  Not really crazy about her redesign.  And since we all knew that this was Alan Scott's coming out party, the kiss and proposal to his boyfriend were no longer a big deal to me.  I imagine it is a momentous occasion for the Gay community, but it would have been awesome if they were able to keep this a surprise for readers.  Which, I understand in this age of technology it is almost impossible to do.

Earth 2 #2 still gets a thumbs up from me, but it is hard to compare it to that first issue which truly was a masterpiece.  Looking forward to reading more of Earth 2 and reading about how the JSA comes together.

Earth 2 #2 "Comes Out" Today!

All new Earth 2 comic is out in stores today.  This should be a great issue, with Jay obtaining his "new" powers and becoming the Flash.  Also, today is the issue everyone has been talking about where Alan Scott is revealed to be a gay man (see what I did there on the title of the post?).  Can't wait to pick it up and read it later today.

Earth 2 News & Plea to not change Dr. Fate

So after weeks of speculation it has finally been revealed that Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, will be rewritten as a gay man.  Not sure how to feel about this as on one hand what DC is doing to create diversity is awesome, but on the other hand it leaves behind a lot of his history. I see it as a good thing, but in true comic book geek fashion, I am resistant to change when it come to my favorite characters.

It also makes me fearful of the possible changes that may come to Dr. Fate.  Being that he is a C-list character (and that may be putting it generously), he is vulnerable to many changes as the masses are not really familiar with who he is.  In today's Newsarama article on the Green Lantern sexuality issue (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/alan-scott-is-gay-plus-more-gender-race-changes.html) Robinson is quoted as saying that we should be prepared for other characters to change in race, and gender.  Also, in the Robot 6 article (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2012/06/alan-scott-wont-be-the-only-gay-character-in-earth-2/) he states that Alan Scott will not be the only gay character.

I just hope that they keep Dr. Fate as a male figure.  Many months back I tweeted that this would be a great opportunity to make the person under the helm (hopefully Kent Nelson) a person of color in order to bring more diversity to Earth 2.  It would make sense due to Dr. Fate's ties with Egyptian mythology.  What I am fearful of is that they will make him a female character.  This was already tried twice, once with Linda Strauss (when Eric was killed off) and a second time with Inza Nelson.  Both times the character did not work, as evident in the fact that he was eventually made a male figure again.  I know that this may sound sexist but I want the character, my favorite character, that I loved as a kid and continue to love as an adult to stay relatively the same.  Is that too much too ask?  I guess I'll find out in a few months what my beloved Dr. Fate's fate will turn out to be, however, I am going to keep my expectations low so that I am not so disappointed with any of the changes and maybe, just maybe be pleasantly surprised with what may be changes in just a few details.  But in reading Robinson's logic of merging Alan Scott's sexuality with that of his former son Obsidian, this leaves Dr. Fate open to being changed to a female since a female has donned the helm in the past.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against female characters.  In fact some of my favorites characters are Zatanna and Stargirl.  I'm all  for more female characters in comics, especially Earth 2.  Just don't change this one character, PLEASE.

Sincerely,

A BIG Dr. Fate fan
