A Crisis is Brewing in the DC Universe

Just a warning, this post contains possible major spoilers so read at your own risk.

If you have not read yesterday's Justice League Dark issue, you will definitely want to pick it up.  It is setting up something that is quite possibly HUGE for old school JSA fans and fans of DC's supernatural/mystic heroes.  If you have not been keeping up with JL Dark, let me catch you up to speed very quickly: Constantine's obsession over the Books of Magic led to the team recruiting Timothy Hunter in order locate the books.  Once the books were located and opened, they transported Timothy and Zatanna to a different world that is ruled by science and magic is outlawed.  The JL Dark team has now traveled to said world in order to rescue their teammates, but have found that the world has a strange effect on their powers.  Now the portal that was opened in order for the team to travel from the main DC Earth (Earth Prime or Earth 1) is causing a huge disturbance between the said worlds leaving us with a cliff hanger and this to look forward to:

Why is that a big deal?  Because it is an obvious reference to this:

That's right, it looks like Earth 2 is going to have their first major crossover with the main DC Universe!  Now, the title of the next JL Dark story says it is a crisis on two worlds, which one would imagine it is between this new world where magic is outlawed and the main Earth.  However, many months ago, James Robinson stated that the next arc of Earth 2 is Science vs Magic so that fits in right with this JL Dark arc.  Also, in a response to a tweet I sent him, James Robinson sent me the following tweet:

Thanks  but don't get too excited. This is just the prologue. Big things in Issues 11 and 12. Plus surprise characters in 11.

James mentions surprise characters in Earth 2 # 11, could that be the JL Dark team?  If I'm correct in my assumptions, the next few months are going to be very fun for fans of Earth 2, and Justice League Dark!

One More Week!

We are officially one week away from Dr. Fate's reintroduction into the DCnU!!!

Now we know that this is a HUGE deal for me and for other Dr. Fate fans, but with the good doctor's return just one week away, I have some questions about the implications of his return.

1) Will his return be felt, not only on Earth 2, but across the DC Universe? (i.e. will the Phantom Stranger become aware of his presence?)

2) Being that he is one of the more powerful mystical beings in the DC Universe, will he have some involvement in the Trinity War?  Will this be the first of many "Crisis on Multiple Earths"?

3) What about Wotan?  He is a powerful mystical being on his on right.  Will he play a role in the upcoming Trinity War?

Dr. Fate Mention in Madame Xanadu's Vertigo Book

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Doc Fate made an actual appearence in Vertigo's Madame Xanadu series written by Matt Wayner and beautifully illustrated by Amy Reeder Hadley.  It's a shame too since many of DC's mystical characters had at least a small cameo.  However, the Phantom Stranger does mention him, somewhat subtly, in the following panels:

*Oh yeah, we are less than a week and a half away from Dr. Fate's return to Earth 2!

Dr. Fate Art featuring Zatanna

Well, this is probably more like the other way around, the title should read Zatanna art featuring Dr. Fate but since this is a Dr. Fate blog we'll go with what I wrote first.  Anyhow, this is a great piece penciled by Leonardo Colaprieto and colored by Marco Pagnotta.  It can be seen at

DC Mystic Characters Cosplay

Great cosplay of some of DC Comics' mystic characters.  This would also be a great line up of additional characters for the Dark Universe movie.

The Faces of Dr. Fate by Brett Booth

If you guys haven't checked out Brett Booth's blog lately ( you should make the cyber-trip there immediately!  He posted more on the Dr. Fate design along with the original version before the edits.

I gotta say, he did an excellent job with the design.  Some people have complained about it being too detailed but I for one love the detail.  I agree with Brett when he says that "Egyptian designs were intricate and beautiful" and that Dr. Fate should reflect that complexity.  Brett goes on to say "Simple is fine, but Fate is complex, ancient and otherworldly, he should reflect that."  Couldn't agree with Mr. Booth more.

With that said here are some of the great designs:

Awesome look at the Doctor's profile.  Love the engraving of wings and the Eye of Horus on the Helm.

The original redesign, which may have been a bit busy. Love the 3rd eye looking dot on the helm.

The final design in Dr. Fate's original colors.  Simply amazing.  I love this design.

The final cut.  Like Mr. Booth, I wish they kept the original blue and gold, but I gotta admit, the black and gold looks pretty cool.

Overall, I am absolutely thrilled with the new design.  The detail on the helm and belt plate looks amazing.  Love the engraving on the helm.  It really is just fantastic.  Again, you can see more on Brett Booth's blog

Remembering Kent Nelson the Original Dr. Fate

We are marching closer and closer to the return of Dr. Fate into the DCnU universe.  I, for one, cannot wait and am looking forward to seeing Dr. Fate not only in a new uniform but with a whole new secret identity.  However, I felt that we should take a moment of silence to remember the very first person to wear the helm and gave up his youth and chance at a regular life to become Dr. Fate: Kent Nelson.  I chose the following panels to remember the character just to show how much he gave up and because in a sense he has passed and there is a new kid on the block that will wear the mantle of Fate.  So here it is; remember those times that Dr. Fate (Kent Nelson) died?:

I love the epitaph on the grave of Kent Nelson from the 4 part mini-series in the 80's.  It says it all.  Luckily, we won't totally have to say good by to Kent Nelson, because as James Robinson stated earlier, Kent will continue to be in a mentor role for Khalid!  Very exciting stuff!

New Doctor Fate Design Revealed!

Here it is folks, take it all in!  The design by Brett Booth is breathtaking!

The new design is very reminiscent of the Young Justice design which is more than alright by me.  I love that Brett Booth kept all of the original elements of Dr. Fate but still managed to give him a bad-ass new look.  The detail on his belt looks fantastic as does the armor looking boots and gloves.  If this is the cover to April's Earth 2 issue I may have to buy at least three copies.  One to read, one to keep in perfect condition, and one to possibly make a poster out of the front cover for my cubicle at work.  Cannot wait till 2/6/13, when we finally see him in action.

How About This as an Idea for a Dark Universe Plot Line

First, I would like to wish all my readers a very Happy New Comic Book Day!  Today brings the count down till we finally get to see Dr. Fate in the DCnU to 27 days!

On to the matter at hand, I would like to propose to Mr. Del Toro, and to the executives both at DC Comics and Warner Brothers and alternate plot line to the proposed Dark Universe movie story.  I propose putting Alan Moore's "The End" from his run on Swamp Thing as the movie's story line.  The story has most of DC's magical characters: Dr. Fate, Swamp Thing, Constantine, Spectre, Phantom Stranger, Deadman, Zatanna, Zatara, Madame Xanadu and Etrigan.   The story is solid, full of action, and awesome.  What else can you ask for in a movie?

Let's Get Dr. Fate into Justice League Dark Movie!

Really exciting news have come out in the last few days about the proposed JL Dark movie by Guillermo Del Toro.  Newsarama has a story about the proposed film here stating that the working title of the film might be Dark Universe and will feature several of DC's magical characters including Swamp Thing, Etrigan, Constantine, and Zatanna.  Unfortunately no mention of Dr. Fate.  Comic Book Resources writes essentially the same thing on their site.

Now, I understand that the current JL Dark roster doesn't include Dr. Fate and that the story that they are basing it on may also not have included Dr. Fate, but COME ON!  This is Dr. Fate!  Like James Robinson once said (and I'm paraphrasing here) "You can't have magic without Dr. Fate." So if you are a Dr. Fate fan I encourage you to write DC Comics and Warner Brothers and let's try to get the good Doctor on film.  All you Dr. Fate fans, don't you want to see the Ankh Avenger on the big screen?  I say we email, tweet and facebook the studio and DC comics to get Dr. Fate on the film.  We at least have to try don't we?

That Time When The Spectre & Dr. Fate Fought

Two of the most powerful mages faced off on the pages of All-Star Squadron.  And although The Spectre ended up getting the better of Dr. Fate in that fight (kind of, he sent Dr. Fate traveling through different dimensions), he did admit that Dr. Fate was much more powerful than he ever thought.

This was too cool, famed comic book writer Ron Marz gave ToF a big shout out last night on twitter!  Check it out:

Just discovered there's a Doctor Fate blog here: One of my favorite characters, great potential.

Super cool to get recognition from comic industry writers, but even cooler to find out that they are Dr. Fate fans.  A big thanks to Mr. Marz for the shout out.

Happy 1st New Comic Book Day of 2013!

Today is the 1st New Comic Book Day of 2013, which means we are one month away from the reintroduction of Doctor Fate into the DCnU!  With that I leave you to ponder what Superman has always pondered; exactly how powerful is Dr. Fate?
