Endless Debate: Is Dr. Fate Powerless Without His Helmet?

Sometimes, when I get drawn into comic book arguments (yes, I realize how that sounds), people will tell me that Dr. Fate is weak because he is nothing without his helmet.  This has some truth, to some extent, as the Helmet of Nabu is the source of Dr. Fate's powers as it contains the soul of Nabu within it, and if not, it still contains magical powers.  Now depending on which Dr. Fate we are talking about, he (or she) is not completely helpless without the Helm.  If one remembers the Golden Age Kent Nelson's origin story, he was not only aged and given the Helm along with the Amulet of Anubis and the Cloak of Fate, but he was also taught the art of levitation and mystic arts as well. See below:

Inza Nelson studied the mystic arts with Kent, so even before she donned the Helm, she also had a small amount of mystic might.  And both she and Kent studied the fighting arts.  Furthermore, people forget that the Amulet of Anubis and Cloak of Fate also contain mystical powers.  So although the Helm is the main artifact of Fate that provides his powers, it is not the sole source powers.

Hector Hall, being reincarnated several times, and being a crime fighter in former lives as well knows how to handle himself in a fist fight.  Even Khalid, the newest Dr. Fate, appears to have a connection with Nabu even when he does not have the Helmet on.  How deep those powers are or will be without the Helm still remains to be seen.

So to those who say that Dr. Fate ain't much without his helmet I say SUCK IT.  You can pretty much say the same thing about Green Lantern, Hourman, Iron Man, etc...  But that is what draws me to these type of characters, anyone can be Dr. Fate or Green Lantern.  That is a very cool concept.

Justice League Dark # 23 Review (contains spoilers)

Okay, so I'm going to start this by stating my disappointment with what was Dr. Fate's first appearance in the Justice League Dark comics.  I was really hoping for more than just one panel and a mention by Deadman.  I mean, if the appearance was limited to the one panel, why even announce it at ComicCon?  Hawkgirl and Flash of Earth 2 were in the very same panel but they weren't announced.  Okay, I get that it is setting up what looks to be the first "Crisis on Multiple Earths" type event with Earth 1 & Earth 2, and that Dr. Fate may play a significant role in the event (which would make me very happy) but still.  If you are going to make an announcement that a character is showing up in a comic, that character better appear in more than just one panel.

Apart from that [big] gripe, I thought it was a solid issue.  Fun to see the heroes fight over Pandora's Box, and Mikel Janin's art is incredible as usual.  He is by far my favorite of DC's artists and that is saying a whole lot considering DC has artists like Brett Booth and Nicola Scott in their artist stables.  After I got over my disappointment of how little Dr. Fate was actually in the book, I enjoyed the art and the story.  Overall it was a great read...but still disappointed in how small Dr. Fate's part was in the book.

Happy New Comic Book Day!

Happy NCBD!  Don't forget to pick up your copy of Justice League Dark today.  Not only does the Trinity War continue in today's issue but the new Dr. Fate will be making his first appearance in the main DC Earth!

Dr. Fate Appears in Justice League Dark this Week

Dr. Fate will be appearing in this week's issue of Justice League Dark as the Trinity War continues to rage on.  Below is a splash page depicting Dr. Fate being affected by Pandora's Box:

I certainly hope that Dr. Fate's appearance will go beyond this one panel as I am very interested to see how he fits into this war which is lead mostly by magic and mysticism.   I also wonder how much Nabu knows about what is going on.  If you all recall, during the Flashpoint event, Kent Nelson knew that there was something wrong about the world they lived in:

In the above panel, as he is dying, Kent tells Deadman that he wasn't supposed to be there anyway.  Another thing that intrigues me is, if the Helm's power will have any effect on Pandora's Box?  In the Flashpoint event, the Amazons were very interested in getting their hands on the Helm of Nabu as they thought that its power would tip the scales in their war against Atlantis.

Lastly, and I know this is a long shot here, we all know that Nightwing is going to play a major role in the Forever Evil event.  Some were even worried that he was going to be killed off.  I wonder if Dr. Fate will make an appearance there as well to help him, as they are connected through the Flashpoint event.  In the Flashpoint world, Nightwing (Dick Grayson) becomes the last heir to the Helm of Nabu and the final Dr. Fate of that world.  So who knows, Dr. Fate might show up to lend him a hand.

Dr. Fate and Dr. StrangeFate in a Video Game!?!?!

I'm not 100% sure what this is from, but it appears to be from a fan created video game.  The website for the game iswww.scruffydragon.com.  Not sure if it's actually playable but what ever it is, it is pretty damn awesome!

Same deal for this second video.  Website listed for the video is www.crusadercast.com.  Again, not sure if it's an actual playable video game or if it fall under "fan art."  Whatever it is, it is pretty damn awesome! Sorry, blogger can't seem to find the video on the search, but below is the direct link to the video.

Injustice Gods Among Us Dr. Fate News

Zatanna was recently introduced into the Injustice Game and yesterday her ending was revealed.  What is great is that her ending involves Dr. Fate and the Tower of Fate.  Take a look here:

Big thanks to my twitter friend Kenney (@Downfourality) for the heads up on the ending.  It's awesome to see Dr. Fate have such a big role in her ending.  Although, we don't actually get to see him, we know that he is active in the Injustice Universe.  It's also awesome to see that Ed Boon used the New 52 Tower of Fate.  This keeps my hopes up that Dr. Fate may still show up in the game.

Earth 2 # 15 Review (contains spoilers)

As James Robinson's final issue of his Earth 2 run rapidly approaches, so does the end of our heroes' luck, or so it seems in this month's story.  Our heroes, both the World Army and Green Lantern, Flash and Dr. Fate face off with what the Flash describes as the Three Terrors.  Earth 2 # 15 is truly action packed and it gets started with a bang.  Steppenwolf's Hounds (who Flash refers to as Terrors) have a fairly easy fight with the Earth's super-powered wonders.  With one of the Terrors making some of the World Army go temporarily insane and turn on one another.  As I had predicted way back when the Sandmen were first introduced, they are beginning to get killed off.  I suspect that Wesley Dodds will be the last Sandman standing, if not by the end of this story arc, then eventually.

To break up the story, Robinson also has the reader follow Hawkgirl on her ongoing investigation into the death of GL's fiance (he was more than just a lover to Alan Scott).  This is where we get reintroduced to a classic JSA villain the Fiddler!  However, this time "he" is reincarnated into this new DC Universe in the female form and "his" name is now Melody.  Finally to further break up the story, we also follow Mister Miracle and Big Barda's fight with Fury.

This issue was a ton of fun to read.  The battles were intense and every single story line in this issue is left with a cliff hanger.  Kind of sucks that next month is DC's Villains month because we will have to wait till October to see what happens to our heroes in James Robinson's final Earth 2 issue.

Dr. Fate Art by Keith Giffen

Keith Giffen was one of my favorite Dr. Fate artists.  He and Walt Simonson were fantastic at drawing Dr. Fate.  I love how dark this piece is.  I hope that if Dr. Fate gets his own book at some point in the future (even a short mini), that DC goes the dark route with his story and art.

Happy New Comic Book Day/Earth 2 Day

Happy New Comic Book Day everyone, and a happy Earth 2 Day to all my fellow Earth 2 fans.  Today's issue should be fun to read although it looks like it's going to be painful for our heroes.  Since it might be a heavy issue I give you this picture to add some levity to your day.

Doctor Fate looking to get his fortune read from the BIG carnival fortune teller.

Found this picture looking through Yahoo images.  Don't know who the artist is that shot it and put it together, but whoever you are you are awesome.
