Earth 2: World's End #6 Preview

Comic Book Resources has the preview to today's Earth 2: World's End issue.  And although I am still not a fan of the character, I gotta say the art for today's issue makes the New 52 Dr. Fate look pretty cool.  At least the art is catching up and the New 52 Dr. Fate looks like the Dr. Fate we once knew.  The Helm looks great in the panels below, very reminiscent of the art from Gerber's Dr. Fate stories.  A bit of a bright side in an otherwise dark era for Dr. Fate (and the poor character has had his share of dark times)

Yes, Dr. Fate IS a Doctor

So, today I am addressing something that comes up every once in a while on Twitter, and came up in yesterday's Injustice Year 3 comic as can be seen below.

As you can see, Dr. Fate's doctor title comes into question by Harley Quinn.  I see this on Twitter all the time and being an over obsessive nerd, it tends to irk me.  Mostly because people are wrong.  Many who have held the Helm were actual doctors.  Two of which were M.D.'s.  I'll give Tom Taylor that this is an alternate universe and who knows what this Dr. Fate has accomplished as a civilian, in fact we are not even sure that it is Kent Nelson under the Helm.  But let's look at the evidence, the original, Golden Age Dr. Fate eventually went back to school to become an actual physician.  As seen in the panel below:

If you want to dismiss this as Golden Age silliness, Dr. Fate actually references his training a few times in the Silver Age when he was part of the All-Star Squadron.  If you want to dismiss this altogether, he has also referenced a PhD in Archaeology when Inza took over as Dr. Fate.

Kent Nelson's Grand Nephew, Kent V. Nelson, who was the last to wear the Helm before the New 52 came into being, was a licenced Psychiatrist.  A psychiatrist differs from a psychologist in that a psychiatrist is an M.D. not a PhD. and is able to prescribe medications.

Lastly, the New 52 Dr. Fate (Khalid Ben-Hassin) also holds a PhD. in Archaeology.  True he is not THAT kind of doctor, but a doctor none the less.

Lastly, there have been several instances in which Dr. Fate has used his powers either to heal someone or at the very least keep them alive.  So if a doctor is defined as someone that heals, Dr. Fate is definitely a doctor.

Plans for Dr. Fate in Constantine Television Show

Daniel Cerone spoke to CBR about the upcoming (starting tomorrow in fact) Constantine television show on NBC.  The following is a quote from the interview:

"Doctor Fate's helmet pops up in the pilot. Is that just an Easter Egg or do you have plans for him?
We have more ideas for Doctor Fate than I could list in this phone call. We're excited about paying that off. We don't have any concrete plans right now, but we have multiple pitches for stories. It is fully our intention to pay off that Easter Egg."

This is really exciting!  I really hope that they will go with Gerber's run for  Dr. Fate and introduce Kent V. Nelson as the host of the Helm of Nabu.  This would also imply that Kent Nelson (his Grand-Uncle) once wielded the Helm, and further imply that the JSA once existed.

Constantine January Solicitation with the New 52 Dr. Fate featured on the cover

Above is the cover for Constantine #21 featuring the New 52 Dr. Fate.  I wish I could still get excited to see the New 52 Dr. Fate on the covers of comics, but I'm just waiting for this nightmare to be over. I'm hoping that somehow, one of the many DC comics Crisis that are scheduled/planned will bring back the original Dr. Fate.  Anyhow, the description of the issue is below:

With legions of Parademons on the attack, Constantine forges an alliance with Doctor Fate. But as time begins to run out, will they escape Earth-2 – or help destroy it?

Looks like Dr. Fate is joining the fight in the Infinite Crisis video game comics!  Check out the description for the January #7 issue:

Three new Multiverse heroes struggle to defend the world of Nil from a siege by an army of Nightmare Metallos. Batman and his first team arrive, but it may be too late for Dr. Fate, Power Girl and Green Arrow. And where is Nix Uotan, last of the Monitors?

Unfotunately I have not been reading this series and am unsure if this will be his first appearance.  Is anyone reading these books?  If so, please let me know if Dr. Fate has been a part of the story.

Nergal Cast in Constantine Television Series

While perusing the Constantine page, I noticed that they listed that actor Joey Phillips has been cast as Nergal.  The episode he appears in is listed as unknown, but then again they only have two episodes listed.   This is really exciting news because Nergal is one of Dr. Fate's oldest enemies dating back to the Golden Age:

Granted, Dr. Fate met Nergal only once in the Golden Age.  However, he was the first enemy that Kent V. Nelson went up against when he took over the role as Dr. Fate, and Nergal referenced the one time meeting from the Golden Age.

I hope this means that the possible Dr. Fate will be Kent V. Nelson.  As it appears that the Helm does not have a host at this time, it may be entirely possible that the grandnephew of the original Kent Nelson might be the show's Dr. Fate.  Of course if this happens I will be in comic fandom heaven.

Earth 2: World's End # 3 Preview has the preview to next week's Earth 2: World's End issue, and guess who is on the cover?  The New 52 Dr. Fate.  By the way, I am going to start referring to this Dr. Fate as "the New 52 Dr. Fate" as I am not a big fan of the new version of the character and would like to distinguish him from his previous, superior, incarnations (sans maybe Jared Stevens).  Here is the description to the issue:

The conflict in DC's newest weekly comic is quickly heating up as Darkseid's forces invade Earth 2. Next week's chapter will see Hawkgirl and Doctor fate rush to London to stave off a European invasion. But with the Helmet of Nabu controlling Fate's actions, can he be trusted in this pivotal moment?

I gotta admit tho, the art on the cover is pretty nice.

Review: Injustice Year 3 #1 Review

Before I get into this review I'd like to acknowledge yesterday as a pretty significant day for Earth 2 fans.  Lots of comics having to do with our favorite Earth were available to us.  We had the regular Earth 2 title (no Dr. Fate appearance there), Earth 2 World's End #1 which had a bit of Dr. Fate who now just goes by Nabu and continues to ramble on in prophecies, and Constantine's ongoing series with the character touching down on Earth 2 and facing Wotan.  All in all, pretty awesome day.  Hopefully we get to see more of Dr. Fate, although I am not a big fan of the current version of the character.

Now on to some Dr. Fate goodness!  I love that Dr. Fate is becoming more involved in Injustice.  I also love to see an older version of the character in his traditional blue and gold colors.  Love that when he speaks, his word bubbles have the gold/yellow highlight around them.  This Dr. Fate, although not the exact version of Dr. Fate I grew up with, feels like home. This Dr. Fate is good, the person under the Helm is in control.  This Dr. Fate is powerful, this Dr. Fate is the closest to the character I grew up with he has been in two years.  And although he hasn't done all that much, I already like him better than the New 52 version.

The comic itself was brilliant.  Tom Taylor gives us another break from the constant chaos that this Earth is going through to give us some comedy.  The way he writes Constantine is very natural.  He is funny, cocky, yet grounded.  Love the inclusion of the mystical beings and that Detective Chimp is now involved.  The DC comics mystical side is so awesome, I am so glad to be able to read a book with all these characters again.  I am really looking forward to the rest of Year 3, and if this first issue is an indication it is going to be great.  Thanks Tom for the all around awesomeness.

Taylor Brings In The Mystics in Injustice Year 3

Today is the start of Injustice Year 3, which will feature DC Comics' mystical beings including Doctor Fate!!!  Can't wait to find out who is behind the Helm.  Is it Kent Nelson, Kent V. Nelson or maybe Hector Hall?  Really hoping to see Kent Nelson in action again, it would be so great even though I know he's fighting a losing cause.

Injustice Year 2 Final Chapter Review (with spoilers)

As always, Tom Taylor does a fantastic job with Injustice, and the final chapter to Year 2 is no exception.  I don't think I have ever been disappointed with a single issue of Injustice.  It has been fantastic the whole way through.  In this issue Superman is exposed for the tyrant that he has become to the entire world, and let me say that he does not give any F's.  After being exposed he goes on a tear, literally ripping apart members of the Green Lantern Corps after finally doing away with Ganthet and Mogo.

The ending of the story, or epilogue if you will, is really the bright spot of this comic.  And what do you know, it features Dr. Fate!

Dr. Fate comes out of the Tower of Fate to rescue Black Canary who is "fated" to die after her battle with Superman.  However, the person behind the Helm (who I am assuming to be an older Kent Nelson) intervenes and saves her, by taking Canary to a different dimension and "reuniting" her with the Green Arrow of that Earth.

This ending is the kind of stories that I feel can only be told through the character of Dr. Fate.  Sure, any mystical character with magical powers could have done what Kent Nelson did, but it is somehow more poetic when done by Dr. Fate.  This beautiful, positive ending, assures me that Tom Taylor "gets" who Dr. Fate is, and what the character is about.  I hope that he gets a chance to write more of Dr. Fate in this manner in the future.  On a personal note, it was great to see my favorite character depicted as I remember him from his days with the JSA.  Even if it was just a glimpse of the old Dr. Fate I thoroughly enjoyed it.  The final chapter of Injustice Year 2 gets two very high thumbs up from this blog.  Loved it.

The Pre-New 52 Universe Still Exists!

HOLY SH!T!!!!   CBR has an article on their site showing the last page of today's "Superman: Doomed" issue and it is glorious! (See below)  Just when DC comics has you at the end of your rope they pull this bit of awesomeness!  The Pre-New 52 universe still exists out there somewhere.  All our beloved characters are still having adventures that we are unaware of.  I hope that they all make a comeback very, very soon!

This part of the panel has me particularly excited!  As much as I am rooting for Khalid, I would love to see Kent Nelson behind the Helm of Nabu again!

Multiversity: Society of Super-Heroes (quick and dirty) Review

A universe where Dr. Fate is the main man?  Yes please and thank you!!  As you can tell, I absolutely loved this issue of Multiversity.  Doc Fate is awesome, he is a mix of Batman, Dr. Fate, and Doc Savage.  Did I mention that I loved this issue of Multiversity?  This issue had everything including Kent Nelson and Nabu name drops by Doc Fate.  There where also ankhs!

It was cool to see Doc Fate also be a person of color, that much like Khalid, was an adopted son of Kent and Inza Nelson.  It was also awesome to have him be the leader of the Society of Super-Heroes.  God, this issue was awesome.  But the very best part of the issue is the panel below:

That's Doc Fate kicking Doctor Faust right in the nuts.  Awesome!  This issue had everything, Lady Blackhawks, the Atom, Abin Sur as this section's Green Lantern, Immortal Man, zombies, and just plain awesomeness.  I give it 5 stars,, no, I give it 10, no wait 100 stars...well, you get the picture, the book was phenomenal.  If I didn't have to get back to work I would write much, much more, but bottom line I loved it.  It felt like the old school DC comics I read as a kid.

Constantine Future's End Review (with spoilers)

Words cannot express how disappointed I was with this issue and how disappointed I have been with how Dr. Fate has been portrayed in DC Comics' New 52 ever since James Robinson left.  The story itself, wrttten by Ray Fawkes, for this one-shot is actually pretty great.  It was creepy, captivating, and as stand alone horror story I really enjoyed it.  Had the antagonist been anyone else but Nabu/Dr. Fate I would have REALLY enjoyed it.  Sadly, it was Nabu who was the antagonist, but this is a totally different Nabu than we've seen before.  Sure, in the pre-New 52 comics Nabu was sort of a dick.  He took Kent Nelson's youth and father from him, was manipulative, he forced Eric Strauss into becoming Dr. Fate, and he was an asshole to Hector Hall.  Even after all this however, you knew that deep down inside he was doing it for the greater good.  He wanted to save mankind from the forces of Chaos, he had some redeeming qualities.  This Nabu, the New 52 Nabu, has none of that.  And it is sad.  The previous Nabu redeemed himself by sacrificing himself to defeat the out of control Spectre and bring on a new age of magic.  The previous Nabu gave up being a Lord of Order in order to save mankind from the coming of the Kali Yuga age.  This Nabu has no issue sacrificing innocents for his own purposes.  The previous Nabu, the real Nabu, was a Lord of Order, one of the most powerful magical beings in the entire Multiverse. This Nabu, the New 52 Nabu is not.  For the new fans, I highly suggest you go back and read some of the old material to find out who the real Dr. Fate was.  He was a drastically different character from that of the New 52.

I don't know if the writers, editors, head honchos just don't like the character but ever since that awesome origin story James Robinson gave us, he has been sidelined and now Nabu has been eliminated/replaced.  Also, DC prides itself on bringing diversity to comics yet they kill off one of their few Egyptian characters in Khalid. The whole thing just stinks for fans of this awesome character.  I for one am deeply disappointed, I'm going to stick around for the end of the Future's End stuff to see if the events of this one shot are erased or become cannon.  If it is to be canon, it may be a sign for me to take a break from comics.

Constantine Future's End Preview has the preview to this week's Constantine Future's End issue and we Dr. Fate fans won't be disappointed.  The Helm of Nabu is a prominent plot point for this issue.  However, looks like DC wasn't satisfied with an Egyptian male being the new Dr. Fate and are looking to make Dr. Fate a woman again.  If this is the case, it really sucks that Khalid never really got a chance to be Dr. Fate.  Hope that I'm wrong and Khalid continues to be Dr. Fate after the Future's End stuff is over.  If he is not, I will probably take a break from comics for a while.

The Constantine Writers Just Tweeted This Tease

The Constantine writers just Tweeted this out, yes they did!!!  It looks like Dr. Fate, or at least the Helm of Nabu, will be playing a role in the upcoming series and may be more than just an Easter Egg.  So excited!!

Multiversity #1 Review

Newsarama was right when they said that Multiversity will blow your mind.  I am still not sure what to make of it.  Not sure if I liked the first issue or not.  I enjoyed reading it, but not sure if I liked it.  I like the premise, that's for sure.  But I wish the book had a little more subtlety to it.  A lot of the the things were narrated/explained to us that felt a bit like the after credit scene in Anchorman where Ron Burgundy is narrating everything that is happening effectively ruining the moment.  Some of the characters were kind of weird, but that is what this comic is supposed to be about "weirdness", am I right?

The Marvel analog characters for the Avengers I thought were pretty lame.  Marvel did a great job with the DC analogs (The Great Society), DC not so much with the Retaliators.  The comic book geek Flash is also not a favorite of mine.  This series will take some time to get used to.  I was kinda hoping for one-shots of different characters but it seems like the book has an encompassing arc that involves all the characters.  Anyhow, it was definitely different which is good.  I'm really looking forward to the next issue featuring Doc Fate!

Dr. Fate Reference in My Little Pony Comic!

There is a reference to Dr. Fate in My Little Pony #17 by IDW!  That is freaking awesome!  As you can see below, the Helm of "Neigh-bu" is displayed in a glass case.  How rad is that!  Thanks to @Basti_OOC for posting this on Twitter!

New Avengers #21 Preview

Comic Book Resources has the preview to next week's New Avengers #21, and right away we see the sad demise of the Great Society.
