Dr. Fate in the Constantine Show!!!

Just saw this on youtube by Comic Book Cast.  They freeze-framed a shot of Constantine's layer with what looks like the Helmet of Fate on Constantine's table!  How awesome would it be if Dr. Fate really does show up in the show.  It looks like he may be at least referenced which is SO awesome.  Check out the video below.

Happy Birthday to Gardner Fox!

Today is Gardner Fox's birthday.  For those who don't know, Mr. Fox is responsible for the creation of Doctor Fate and several other DC characters from the Golden Age.  Mr. Fox would be celebrating his 103rd birthday if he was still alive.  I find it cool that Dr. Fate's first appearance and Mr. Fox's birthday fall on the same month.  Pretty cool coincidence, or maybe it was fate?

Mr. Fox is also credited with the idea of DC's Multiverse having written the scrips for "The Flash of Two Worlds" which brought together for the first time the Golden Age Flash and the then modern Flash of the Silver Age.  Fox then went on to write scripts for the stories featuring the JSA and JLA (Crisis in Two Earths) which featured crossovers with the characters of Earth 1 and Earth 2.

So join me in celebrating Gardner Fox's life and his wonderful creations that we still enjoy today. Thank you Mr. Fox for the wonderful characters and stories!

DC comics have released the covers to September's Future's End comics and www.bleedingcool.com has them!  Here it is the AWESOME cover to the Constantine issue:

*Correction*  It is not Bleeding Cool that has the covers but rather Comicosity that has them.  Sorry about that. Here is the direct link: http://www.comicosity.com/dc-comics-releases-covers-creator-lineup-for-septembers-futures-end/

Review: New Avengers #18 "Into the Breach"

This issue didn't have much on the Norn and the Great Society and was mostly a "set up" issue.  Most of the comic has Black Panther talking to his ancestors and getting their advice on the upcoming situation.  I may be reading too much into it, but within Black Panther's conversation with his ancestors, Jonathan Hickman writes about the Great Society with a lot of reverence.   I almost feel his respect for the heroes that the Great Society is modeled after, and it is a really cool feeling.  But again, I might be reading too much into it.

There is not a whole lot of action that happens in this issue, as again, it really is more of a set up before the big show down between the Illuminati (New Avengers) and the Great Society.  There is also a conversation between Beast and Bruce Banner discussing the weapons of mass destruction that beast seems to be producing and explaining why they are being produced (again more set up).  I didn't mind the "filler" issue because it means that the Norn and Great Society get to stay alive that much longer.  But it looks like next issue the inevitable fight between the two teams will come to ahead.  Next issue will be very interesting.

Earth 2 #23 Review "The Kryptonian Pt. III"

This is the issue most Earth 2 fans have been looking forward to.  Our heroes are forced into action, as Evil Superman and Darkseid's forces attack their hiding spot.  Tom shows off some of his great writing skills with an awkwardly touching moment in the book where Superman takes Red Tornado/Lois Lane back to his parents home.  Superman appears to still have some good left in him as he continues to have a connection with his parents.

Dr. Fate, although still shell shocked has a few more lines in this issue even foretelling the demise of one of the heroes. Hopefully he'll put the Helm Back on soon and see some action.  Overall, this was a really good issue.  The seeds are planted for that turn around that most Earth 2 fans have been hoping for, but not before more tragedy happens in the form of the (apparent) death of one of the heroes.  Hopefully the momentum will continue onto the next issue.  One scene that really stuck out, besides Superman's visit to his parents' home, was the reintroduction of Green Lantern.  What a great way for him to come back.  If you stopped reading Earth 2 this is a good time to start reading again.

Check out this awesome Batman '66 variant cover for this week's Earth 2 issue.   Makes me nostalgic for the old school Justice Society of America team.  What a great cover.

Happy 74th Birthday to Dr. Fate!

Ladies and Gentlemen, join me in wishing one of the best characters in the DC Universe a very Happy Birthday as he turns 74 years old today!

Dr. Fate's first appearance was in More Fun Comics #55 which came out in May 1940, making Dr. Fate one of DC comics oldest characters.

New Avengers #17 Review: A Perfect World Part II

I am really, really enjoying this book.  I'm not sure how much the New Avengers ties into the rest of the current Marvel Universe but as a stand alone story it is really fun.  I love the fact that the last two issues have been like reading a DC Universe book, but contained inside of the Marvel Universe.  I like to pretend that this Earth is also part of an alternate DC world, and why not?  With all these different dimensions, who's to say that there would be no cross over? (except for the Marvel and DC executives)

The book is really well written by Jonathan Hickman and the art by Rags Morales is awesome.  The story somewhat mirrors the desperation that is happening in Earth 2.  However, this threat comes in the form of incursions from different alien and robotic races bent on the destruction of Earths across the Multiverse.

I love how Hickman depicts the Great Society.  They are heroic, hopeful, and willing to fight to the end.  Even Namor and Black Panther who are watching them from a far admire the team's heroics.  If you take this and contrast it with the heroes of Earth 2, the originals appear somewhat lacking.  To be fair though, the main Marvel heroes are showing the same kind of signs of desperation and loss of hope that the Earth 2 heroes are showing.  Maybe even more so, as evidenced by Namor's words in the panel below:

In his conversation with the Black Panther, Namor goes on to say that the heroes (including themselves) are only warring for fleeting moments, that sooner or later the incursions will take their toll and they all will die.  This is in sharp contrast to the Sun God's (Superman's analog) words of hope that everything lives, and his willingness to die for his planet.

The issue was extremely fun.  I really like the Great Society and the Norn as they remind me of the pre-New 52 JSA.  I like the character designs and the fact that the Norn looks so much like Dr. Fate.  I also like that Boundless looks like a mix of the current Earth 2 Flash and the regular Flash, that the Jovian can read minds and shape shift, and that the Rider's secret identity is "Wayne" and has red eyes.

The story ends with a predictable cliff-hanger (predictable because I have seen the cover of the next issue) with the heroes of the Great Society facing off with the Illuminati aka the New Avengers.  I really hope the Great Society survives and continues to be part of the Marvel Universe but I highly doubt that will happen.  Anyhow, I am enjoying the story and really look forward to the next issue.
