New Avengers #20 Review: "Blu'Dakorr"

The showdown between the Great Society and the Illuminati finally happens and IT WAS AWESOME!  Below are some of the images of the fights:

Sun God (Superman vs Hulk)

Black Panther vs The Rider (Batman)

Namor vs Martian Man Hunter (I forget his G.S. name)

Iron Man vs Boundless (Flash)

Dr. Strange vs the Norn (Dr. Fate)
Note how Dr. Strange states that the Norn does not have "the gift" and calls him a mere curator of magical items. A shot at Dr. Fate and the Helmet of Nabu, no doubt.

This issue was fantastic.  One of the best comics I have read in a while.  Hickman's writing and Schiti's art were spot on. The entire issue was action packed and the fights did not disappoint.  I liked that Black Panther and the Rider were fighting to a draw, Sun God defeats the Hulk, Boundless easily disposes of Iron Man and that MMH looked to be besting Namor.  The Norn seemed to have the upper hand on Dr. Strange until the Doctor calls upon the forces of the dark arts.  If it had not been for Doctor Strange the Great Society would have bested the Illuminati.  The Great Society is not finished yet, but they are definitely on the ropes, the comic ends with this cliffhanger:

If you're wondering who the guy with the glasses is, well that is the Norn without his helmet:

Turns out the Norn is just a kid.  No doubt in reference to the original Dr. Fate and perhaps his successor, Eric Strauss as they were both kids who were aged by Nabu.

Schiti's art was awesome as you can see from all the panels above.  But it deserves a couple of more samples:

Dr. Fate...errr, I mean the Norn looks just awesome on the above panels.

Look at the expression on the countenance of Sun God after defeating the Hulk.  He has a look of compassion and sorrow that is so telling.  The Great Society possess this basic goodness about them that the Illuminati/Avengers have lost.  A great example of how the art helps the story telling in comics.

Like I said before, this was one of the best comics I have read in a long time.  Hickman definitely made a fan out of me.  Looking forward to the next issue to see what will be the ultimate fate of the Great Society.

Tribute to the Norn and The Great Society

Since it looks like today may be the last issue that the Norn and Great Society will appear in for the New Avengers, I decided to give them a small tribute.  I sincerely hope that they will survive today's clash with the Illuminati but it is very doubtful.  Also hope that they will appear in the Marvel universe later on, they were (are) great characters.  So with no further adieu, here is the Norn/Great Society Tribute:

Dr. Fate Fan Art

Great Dr. Fate piece by that I can only assume is an ode to the Dr. Fate and the Crawling Chaos fan film that is on Youtube, as the piece is titled "Dr. Fate vs the Crawling Chaos".  Very cool.

New Avengers # 20: The End of the Great Society

Well, from the looks of this cover, it looks like we will have to say good bye to the Norn and the rest of the Great Society in the next issue of the New Avengers.  It was a great ride and I hope they (Great Society) somehow survive the clash but it doesn't seem likely.  Hopefully Marvel will bring them back again someday. Really loved the characters.

New Avengers #19 Review (contains spoilers)

This issue was absolutely fantastic!  I know I've mentioned it before in my other New Avengers reviews, but it is funny that similar events are happening in both the Marvel and DC universes.  The incursions that are occurring in the Marvel universe almost parallel the events occurring in the DC universe with the clashes of different/parallel universes.  Both story lines are interesting and fun to read, however, this current story line with the Great Society has been extremely fun.

In this issue the Illuminati (New Avengers) and the Great Society finally meet.  I love how Hickman writes the Great Society.  They are everything the pre-New 52 JSA and JLA were.  They have that iconic heroism about them of the super heroes of old.  It's funny that even in the Marvel Universe, the "DC" superheroes are still better than (some) of their own heroes.  Having said that, the Great Society is (in my opinion) better than what we've seen from most DC heroes in present times.  Case in point below, Sun God being more Superman-y than the New 52 Superman:

That line is so pre-New 52 Superman.  Also, the Rider was much more like Batman in his confrontation of the Illuminati, I can totally see Bruce Wayne in him.  It was great.  The Norn, was involved, mystical, and so very awesome:

The art work in this issue was also fantastic.  Love this close up of the Norn's helm with the pronounced ankh:

If you were waiting for the final showdown between the Great Society and the Illuminati in this issue you might be disappointed.  Much of the issue is a dialogue between the two groups trying to figure out a way to save both of their Earths, feeling each other out and posturing back and forth.  It is not until Namor decides to take action that all hell breaks loose and we are left with the cliff hanger below:

Looks like the final battle between the two superhero teams will be taking place next issue, and as much as I'd like the Great Society to be victorious we all know that their fate has been written in the cards a long time ago.  I really fell in love with these characters over just a few issues, and hope that somewhere along the lines they will be returning.  Looking forward to the next issue but I gotta say I really enjoyed New Avengers #19.  Highly recommend it to everyone.

Helm of Fate Will Definitely Appear on Constantine Television Show

Dear NBC and DC Comics,

You have made this fanboy so extremely happy and I want to thank you for that.  It was a rumor that the Helmet of Nabu would be showing up on the Constantine show and now we have confirmation.  I am so excited for the possibilities.  From the rumors, right now it is only an Easter Egg, but this confirms that Nabu, and consequently Dr. Fate, exist in the program's universe.  I am totally grateful for this shout out to my favorite hero on the first episode, but I am also holding out hope that the Helm will eventually make it to the hands of either Kent Nelson or Khalid.  I would so love to see Dr. Fate make at least one appearance.  (Would be awesome to see him be a semi-regular character).

For those that haven't seen the new trailer you can check it out here:

Thanks to Andrew Lionheart and Mikael for the heads up on the news.

New Avengers #19 Preview  has the preview for next weeks New Avengers #19.  We have the Great Society and Avengers/Illuminati meeting for the first time.  So far, it seems peaceful, which is good for the Great Society.  Let's hope it stays that way, I don't want to see the Norn go away so quickly.

Review: Earth 2 #24 "The Kryptonian Pt. 4"

Ok, this is what I'm talking about!  Our heroes are slowly becoming heroes again.  Alan Scott is back and he is a complete, and total bad ass!  Jay Garrick is finally back in the story.  He, like Dr. Fate, is still shaken up from the torture he has received at the hands of Darkseid's minions but at least we get to see him again.  Dr. Fate is only on three minor panels and has no dialogue, but I was okay with that.  At least Khalid has the Helm of Nabu on instead of just staring at it.  And at least our heroes are beginning to strike back.  Below are the three panels Dr. Fate appears in:

As you can see.  Khalid/Dr. Fate continues to look hurt and needs assistance from Val to walk.  But, like I said, at least he has the Helm on.  It is my hope that he will rebound and be a total bad ass like Green Lantern has become.

The story itself was a lot of fun to read.  It was nice to see Alan Scott and Jay Garrick reunite and to see Hawkgirl kicking ass.  I also liked that Hawkgirl tells GL that he can't do everything alone and that they are supposed to be a team.  Is this a foreshadowing of a possible JSA?  I hope so.  Can't wait till next month's issue, Earth 2 is starting to be fun again.

Earth 2 #24 Preview

CBR has the preview for this Wednesday's Earth 2 issue.  Below is a little taste of the preview, for the entire preview check out the Comic Book Resources website!

I like the little nod to Rorschach Tom Taylor gives via Green Lantern.  Very cool.
